Bhimbetka Rock Shelters – UNESCO World Heritage Site of Prehistoric Art
DirectionBhimbetka Rock Shelters, located in the southern part of Raisen district near the Satpura range, are one of the oldest known human habitations in the world. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bhimbetka features over 700 rock shelters, out of which around 400 contain prehistoric paintings that date back to the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods (over 30,000 years old).
These rock paintings vividly depict hunting scenes, dancing, animal figures, and community life, providing a rare glimpse into early human civilization. The area is also rich in archaeological and anthropological significance, making it a top destination for researchers, historians, and tourists.
The name “Bhimbetka” is derived from “Bhima”, one of the Pandava brothers, and the legend says he once rested here—thus the site means “Bhima’s sitting place”.
